A letter to doubters from a time machine

The Sunday Pages is a weekly newsletter for paid subscribers that rounds up five interesting links for the week, recommends a book with highlights of about a dozen meaningful quotes from the book, and includes occasional updates on personal projects.

I first heard of this book when I heard it’s title used to describe salvation in a different book. Ever since I heard it, I was intrigued. I finally read it and I’m so glad I did.

In my experience, there’s a profound shift that happens when you stop thinking about salvation exclusively in terms of a transaction (though that certainly is part of it) and start thinking primarily in terms of union with Christ. Realizing that what salvation accomplished is nothing less than union with God and the goal of our life is ever deepening union and communion with him changes how we view God and how we go about our life. This book helped me understand that even more.

One thing I’ve been thinking through lately is the idea of having a personal “spiritual canon.” Not in the sense of considering any extra-biblical book as inspired, but simply making a list of the books that have made the most profound impact on your life. A list of books that you believe contain a significant amount of wisdom and that, if someone were to read them, would understand God and, frankly, understand you better to a significant degree. It’s still just a seed of a thought, but everytime I wonder what those books would be for me, this book makes the list. So does this book. Maybe I’ll write something on this more in the future.
