Thanks for your comment! I recently finished the book and it really is fascinating. I've decided that I very much don't like the word "stages", but the concepts in the book are helpful.

That's awesome. I added it to my cart for future reference. Back to your original post, I agree that there was so little emphasis on spiritual formation. I think most of us felt like we were just bumping around in the dark. It brought to mind 1 Peter 4, specifically vs 12, where we're encouraged to "not be surprised by the fiery ordeal...as if something unusual was happening to you." Those ordeals indeed test us and mature us, and that's what God intended--maturity! We've just been hung up on the "it feels unusual" part.
